My first thoughts of mercy, is using the word when play wrestling with friends growing up. “Mercy, Mercy” is the cry of the defeated child as his victor releases him. This probably wasn’t a good use for mercy, because usually that was most of a beating each of them would give each other. Mercy means I deserve punishment, but I don’t get it.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. – Matthew 5:7
Being merciful, means in my sphere of existence, I will always extend mercy to those who violate me. Never seeking revenge for wrongs committed to me. Jesus even talks more about this in verse 39:
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. – Matthew 5:39
The merciful trust God completely, never seeking justice always extending mercy. This extends the knowledge that God is completely in control, and there is a larger plan that is being orchestrated for God’s kingdom. I must always extend mercy.
Lord, help me, I seek Justice, but Lord soften my heart to give mercy, help me to surrender it all for Your Kingdom’s sake. Lord I need mercy!
