Light of the World

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Matthew 5:14

During World War II, the United States and England practiced blackout Drills, in which everyone in a city would turn off all the electric lights and even candles. This way when bombers would make raids at night, it would be hard for them to target the city. It’s amazing how a little light can shine a far distance in the dark. I’ve been in airplanes landing at night, and see the vast array of lights below me, like a network of twinkly roads and houses. Though by themselves they might only light a small area, the reflected light can travel miles.

So too is the Light of Christ in our hearts, when we become Christians, we are a new creation, we are mirrors reflecting Christ to a dark and dying fallen world. Those lights can be see a far distance, even a single candle light can be seen hundreds of feet in pitch blackness. The darker this world grows, the more we will be visible.

Christians shine Christ light by being love in a world full of hate, we are the hands expressing mercy to those down in the mire. So Christ was instructing us in verses 3-13, now he’s telling us what we will be. We will be the hill, we will be the light of the world. There is not much we can do to be outside the spotlight.

Lord, help me to be a reflection of your Love. Don’t allow me to harbor the darkness of this world, but let me shine for you.
