Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Matthew 5:13
What is salt good for? Salt besides making food taste better, it removes water from food preventing organic microbes, bacteria, and viruses from existing in the food, allowing it to spoil. Salt cure is actually packing food in salt, such as pork, beef, and fish, allowing the moisture to be removed, and the food preserved.
We often use salt because sodium chloride, the basic chemicals in salt, actually helps our taste buds work better, making things more flavor filled. When it comes to life, all life needs salt, or electrolytes which help our bodies function. I know that we even give salt blocks (more than just salt, a mixture of minerals) to our goats, who need the minerals to actually live healthy lives.
Can Salt go bad? I found this interesting article online:
Interestingly, though, salt back in New Testament times often did lose its “savor.” In those days, salt was generally not pure. It contained multiple other compounds, most of which held up to humidity better than sodium chloride. So, if the salt was exposed to the typical humidity of a place like Israel, the sodium chloride would eventually evaporate while the other compounds wouldn’t, leaving behind a white substance that appeared to be salt but had none of its flavor.

What good is bad salt? it might look like salt, but it has non of the properties that make salt… well salt! As Jesus puts it straight, it’s only good for people to walk on it like sand or stone.
This is of course just a metaphor for our lives, are we a Christian? Am I a disciple of Christ, do I take Jesus’s teachings and apply them to my life? Do I have the components in my life that make me a Christian? Or, do I look like a Christian, maybe act like a Christian in front of people, but in reality, deep in my soul, I hate Christ.
Salt can’t be maybe salt. It either is or isn’t salt. Just like being a Christian, Am I being ruled by Jesus my King, or am I on the throne of my life?
Lord, May you be the King of my life, may I see your gospel preserve my soul and make me flavorful to you.
