On the way to the bank, I was listening to the local radio station KLBJ, and a lady called up and started talking about how awful it is that children are being separated from their families, and they are being held in “concentration camps”. The host of the program was very kind to allow the lady to rant, but then asked her a clarification question: “So you want congress to pass funding so these children can be re-united with their families?” The lady was flabbergasted, she didn’t know.
Then the host mentioned that the family separation is no longer in effect. These children were unaccompanied minors, and they were kidnapped or taken from their parents in central America, used by the drug cartels to smuggle drugs across the border. The lady looked like a fool, because she didn’t have all the facts.
Often we hear things, and form judgement based upon very little facts, if any. Sometimes we hear stories, they could be true, or they are just made up, who are we to know, but they tug on our heart strings, and try to force us to make a judgement. Rational thinking requires us to wait, and be patient before we make any decision.
This is especially true with things of the heart. If the facts are not evident, don’t make excuses, or make things up. Simply state the facts: I don’t have the information. Most of all, there is no reason to make a quick judgement unless lives are on the line. One thing I’m sure of, the boarder control folks do a great job, and they care about these children.
Wisdom teaches us:
Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.
