Many outside true Christianity see the law as some set of rules that have to be kept to keep people from going to Hell. The problem is the Law is so hard to keep, they change it from keeping the Law, to almost keeping the Law, to keeping the spirit of the law, to finally where we are today, they are throwing it out and making a totally new law they like and can keep.
The problem with these people, is they get the law all wrong. We can’t keep the law, we are all terrible sinners. But Jesus kept the law we couldn’t keep:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Matthew 5:17
Even when God gave Moses the law, God knew man could not keep the law. The children of Israel were actually in the process of making a huge golden calf idol, breaking the first three commands. There had to be a way to redemption, there had to be someone who could perfectly keep the law, and fulfil the need of the law. That person was the All God – All Man Jesus. He perfectly kept the law on our behalf.
But he didn’t come to destroy the law either, so what is the Law? God being perfect and holy gave us the law, an expression of who he is, and what he hates. God created the world with order, and it is sin that removes that order and creates chaos. If we are to love God, we need to love His law. These are things he Hates, we should hate those things also. We need to push those bad things out of our life. Will we sin? Yes, but when we choose to sin, if God’s law is in our heart we will choose to sin less and less.
Lord, I know I am a sinner, and I know you have forgiven me from the fury of your wrath, putting the punishment of my sin on Jesus. Guide me to keep your laws, to follow you in all my ways.
