Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Matthew 6:8
Our Heavenly Father knows what we need, before we even ask of him. Wow, this is so deep from a theological point. God knows all things, but what does that mean? In the last chapter he knows how many hairs on our head, and he knows which hairs are normal color, and which are turning white. I don’t even know how many white hairs I have, but He knows.
Think about this, he knows what we will need before we even know we will need it. And he supplies all our needs. Now it doesn’t say anything about wants, like I want to win the Lottery, that wouldn’t help Him, because He want’s me to need Him.
I admit a huge part of my life is trying to be self sufficient, we live in a rural plot of land, we have a well (which currently isn’t working) that we get our water, we do have power provided by a power co-op. But we live… and the dependence is on me. And what I’m learning is… I’m not very reliable.
Things break, things fall apart, we are constantly fixing things…. but we live in a fallen world and without God, I can’t even imagine what my life would be like. Things are constantly broken, fences break and require mending. But God knows my needs, and he provides ways for me to get those needs met.
Yesterday we had a need for water, and we asked friends at church for help and they let us have some water, what a blessing. I asked men at church for advise, and got some good advise on how to fix issues. God put these men in my life, why, so He could be glorified! God will be glorified, when our well is fixed, He will be the one who provided for the repair.
So when I read this I ask, why do I need to pray then? The answer is easy, because He wants us to pray, to admit we need Him. We might not like that. But our dependence for everything is based on our Father in Heaven. We need first ask, and then we need to thank Him… for it all! Each morning we need to thank Him for our day, and ask him to use us to glorify himself in this dead and dying world.
Lord, Use me to be your hands and feet in this fallen world. You know my need, and you also answer my prayers. Give me guidance on the path I need to take today, that you will be glorified through my life.
