Forgive our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Matthew 6:12
What is debt? Debt is owing anything to someone. When I borrow from someone, I’m in obligation to return it. When I borrow a book from a library, I read it and return it in a timely manner in the condition I received it, other wise I’m obligated to pay a penalty or replace the book. Debt, though it’s useful, can be quite destructive if not controlled.
Our greatest debt, is our debt of sin. Each violation of God’s Holy Law is a debt we owe to our creator, not only that, we are born with debt to sin so we start out in the negative. Our good works do nothing to pay the price of this debt, we are just good sinners. Though we do all we think we must do, we strive to get out of sin Debt, it continues to accumulate. Finally, when reality sets in, we realize, we can’t pay our sin Debt.
Grace, is a an unmerited gift, a gift that is undeserved. God in His mercy poured out Grace in the form of the incarnation, Jesus, wholly God, wholly man, perfect in every way, took upon Himself the Wrath of the Father. He paid the debt, I could not pay! He paid the penalty for my sins, he paid the obligation I deserved. I deserved the wrath of God, but instead, Jesus took that wrath.
Now we are debt free, we have no obligation to God Wrath. So we must take on all those who debt against us, this could be actually financial debts, could be loaning the tool to the neighbor, or letting your son borrow the car, these are all debts, and if those obligations are not met.. The money can’t be payed, the tool gets lost, the car gets damaged, we are called to forgive those debts.
When someone sins against us… we are to forgive them. Remember it’s not an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, we turn the other cheek, we give them our cloak when they sue for our coat. We give them more than they want, this way God uses us to reach their soul for His Kingdom. God gives me the ability each and every day to live for Him without the debt obligation of Sin. I must be able to forgive others, even if they don’t ask, because ultimately the debt is to God alone.
Lord, forgive my debt so I can forgive others, thank you for taking the obligation of my sin debt, help me live with a forgiving and merciful heart taking no obligation from men, but giving them grace.
