Positive Thinking Doesn’t Make it So

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

Matthew 6:27

There is nothing new under the sun, and the positive thinking philosophy even existed during the time of Jesus. I was blessed to be the height I am as a man, but as a young boy I always yearned to be bigger. Just by thinking about being taller doesn’t force our bodies to change.

Jesus knew this, of course, being at creation, He knew the design of the body, with genetics that have more control than any of our good and compelling thoughts. In Jesus day, there was a need for men to be larger, for larger men were able to handle more work, hard work, fishing and farming.

The fact is, God made each of us knowing each day of our lives and knowing what we will need, it’s not positive thinking that should be driving us, but abiding with Christ. Just like the last verse where Jesus was talking about the birds, and how they don’t need to build barns to survive, neither do we need try to change how God made us.

We were each made special, for a purpose, and we must trust our creator and abide with him, to know how we fit into this portrait of providence. We must know, like His disciples, we will be persecuted, and hurt, enduring tests and trials, but our goal should be Soli Deo Gloria, To the Glory of God Alone!

We each have many flaws, and God allowed those flaws and handicaps, but we must strive in every way to seek Him, and He will provide where we are lacking. We don’t need to have anxiety over these things which hinder us because He will bring people into our lives that love Him and have compassion, and He might provide other means to compensate for our lacking, but God always provides, and that is the point of this verse. It’s not our thinking that changes us, it’s God hand of Providence that opens our heart, and allows God to be glorified in our lives, even in our flaws.

Lord, I have many flaws you know, but Lord give me the ability to bring you Glory in spite of my flaws. Help me to reach out to a world of broken people, through the talents and gifts you have loaned me, may I bring honor to your name above all nations. May you receive all honor and Glory throughout this day by all that I say and do. Amen.
